Hong Xiu Ping, a student who received his advanced degree
at Purdue University in the United States, returned to China to serve
in the development of his country. Mr. Hong went abroad in 1988 where
he studied and lived for 5 years. When he came back to China, he searched
for a direction that would be of the most service to himself, his
family, and to China. Pursuing this goal eventually led him to set
up an English language training school. Named "Gateway Language
Village" (GLV), the school is located in Zhuhai, Guangdong province.
In the three short years since it was established, GLV has been successful
in training thousands of students from all over China.
So many Chinese people have complained that their English
is not improving after years of study. They feel that their English
study is like boiling a kettle of water that has never been able to
reach the boiling point or an airplane taxiing on the runway that
has not had a chance to take off.
WHEN Gordon Kerr, a TESL (Teaching of English as a Second
Language) specialist from the UK, finished his speech at the Shenzhen
Daily Holiday English Salon during the spring Festival, he found himself
unable to get off the stage due to an avalanche of questions.
WELCOME To Zhuhai ! This is the large sign that visitors
see when leaving the city on the road to Guangzhou. It is warm and
friendly but, unfortunately, not correct English.
WELCOME To Zhuhai ! The country has made a huge progress
and Chinese language students, on the whole, are hardworking and anxious
to learn. Of the 300 million or so people who have studied English
in China, however, only a tiny percentage, have gained any fluency
in the language.
"Good Morning! Let's sing a song! You are my sunshine,
my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are gray! You'll never
know how much I love you, so please don't take my sunshine away!"
If you want to learn to swim you have to go into the
water and immerse yourself, not just read a book about it. That was
the central message delivered at the open class held at the International
Peace Club on Ningxi Road, Zhuhai this week.
